He was the son of a London merchant and artist. He published a number of his hymns in religious newspapers and periodicals. He was part of a Plymouth Brethren congregation in London and served as an open air preacher. They include: Gems from the Revised Version, with Poems, 1891 and O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, and Other Poems published posthumously in 1926.
I didn’t find much else about his life. This information was originally published on the site The Cyber Hymal (now NetHymnal) and found at the Indelible Grace website…another great resource for hymns with newer tunes.
We sang this a lot in college. It was in the Inter-Varsity Hymnal (that alone probably dates my college experience!) I have loved this hymn for a long time, not just for the tune, but for the beautiful words that remind me over and over again of the boundless love that Jesus has for me! He uses words like vast, unmeasured, rolling as a mighty ocean…underneath me, all around me…
It helps me imagine the hugeness and grandness of Jesus’ love for me! Also reminds me of that wonderful passage in Ephesians 3:14-21 that includes that truth and continues with some great promises as well!
1. O the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me,
Is the current of Thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To Thy glorious rest above!
2. O the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Spread His praise from shore to shore!
How He loveth, ever loveth,
Changeth never, nevermore!
How He watches oer His loved ones,
Died to call them all His own;
How for them He intercedeth,
Watcheth oer them from the throne!
3. O the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Love of every love the best!
Tis an ocean vast of blessing,
Tis a haven sweet of rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Tis a heaven of heavens to me;
And it lifts me up to glory,
For it lifts me up to Thee!
Enjoy these words and meditate on the vast love of Christ for you!
